Day 130, Year 9: The Amazing Oliver Preston Goldstone
Date: Thursday, February 27, 2014
Weather: Skiff of Snow Mid-Day—Again; Still Clear, Cold, and Windy Tonight
Location: Brewer Fiddler’s Cove Marina, North Falmouth, Massachusetts

I realize that I am easily impressed by my grandchildren, but anyone has got to love a 21 month-old who reads while eating lunch—still in his pajamas, no less. I gave Ollie a ‘first course’ for lunch and went back to the refrigerator to get some other things. When I got back to the table, Ollie had pulled Sam’s Scholastic News close to him, opened it, and was fully engaged in ‘reading’ an article about George Washington. And this wasn’t his first antic of the day. He really didn’t want to get dressed this morning, so I let him stay in the pajamas. We were sitting on the couch reading and I got up to go in the kitchen to check on something. When I got back, Ollie had managed to find a tube of deep red lip gloss in Heather’s purse and he had painted his face, as well as his hair. It took a good bit of washing to clean him up, but still at the end of the day his hair was tinted pink. After that clean-up job, Ollie decided to play with the GeoTrax trains in the playroom. Jonah and I got out the GeoTrax on Wednesday and he, along with Jed and Sam, built a roomful of railroad tracks that all three boys are enjoying this week. But this morning, Oliver had the whole set to himself and he played for almost an hour trying out the various controllers and train engines. He wanted me in the room but he didn’t want me to help him. I was just supposed to watch, and so I silently watched as he experimented. He has obviously been watching his older brothers as he knew exactly what he was doing.

Ollie and I had to walk to school to get Sam in a raging snow squall. I had Ollie in the stroller and both of us just had to put our heads down and go. I had a car but no car seat, so walking was our only choice. By the time we got to the school, the snow storm was over and the sun was shining brightly once again. When we got home, Sam had to finish up his science fair project. The projects are due tomorrow and at 2:30 there is a ‘public viewing’ of the projects. Ollie and I will go to the library tomorrow morning for story time, head home to have lunch, and then drive to a T-station on the outskirts of town to pick up Granddad. If things work as planned, Ollie will nap to and from Boston and we should get back just in time to go see Sam’s science project. He collected sand from Flamenco Beach on Culebra and from a beach close to home on Cape Cod. His hypothesis was that sand from Culebra would have more coral and sand from Cape Cod would have more rocks. And as he states, “My hypothesis was right!”
