Day 78, Year 8: Keeping Connected
Date: Sunday, January 20, 2013
Weather: Mostly Sunny and Warm, High in the Upper 60’s F
Location: Lightkeepers Marina in Coquina Harbor, Little River, SC

It was another beautiful day here, but unfortunately we spent most of it indoors. We talked to both of our children via Skype video and talked to cruising friends, Tom and Bette Lee Walker of Quantum Leap. Then we spent time emailing friends so we are feeling well connected tonight. I spent more time editing and naming photos from the beginning of our voyage and then tonight we went to my sister’s to watch the Ravens-Patriots game. Ugh. That was a disaster for the Patriots and Patriot fans, but you can’t win them all. This just wasn’t the one to lose.

Sam had a great birthday party yesterday and was opening his presents from us when we connected via Skype this morning. It was fun to see him open the gifts. We sent Sam and Jonah each wallets and cards with five $1 bills in it. Jonah was so cute. When he saw the money, he immediately counted them out and then neatly put them in his wallet. The he tried to get it into his pocket, but it was just a bit too big for size 3T pants. He did this while Sam danced around with excitement after opening each gift. Oliver watched and every couple of minutes he would look intently at the computer screen and give us a big smile. I don’t know if he knows who we are, but we’ll pretend. In the afternoon when we talked to Justin, Jo, Ziggy, and Coco we had to work a little harder to keep Coco’s attention. She is not quite at the age of curiosity about computer screens. It seems to us that the awareness happens closer to 9 months. But she did give us great big smiles toward the end of the conversation. Ziggy is really into the alphabet right now and wanted to share with us words that begin with certain letters. He started with Z, but instead of Ziggy, he said, “Z starts with zipper.” I love three year olds and their sense of the world. Our friends Tom and Bette Lee sailed across the Indian Ocean this fall, left their boat in South Africa, and are spending a year as land lubbers to see how they like it. They will return to South Africa about this time next year and sail Quantum Leap home. If we go to the Bahamas next year, we might see them there. They brought us up-to-date on friends we haven’t seen since our first year in the Pacific. It is always fun to hear where the cruising friends we met are now.
