Day 57, Year 8: Snow
Date: Sunday, December 30, 2012
Weather: Snow Overnight, Sunny Day; Temp 25 to 32 degrees F
Location: Visiting with Heather and Jed, East Falmouth, MA

It did snow last night, only about an inch, but it was enough to make the world white, glistening, and beautiful. It was sunny today, but the temperature didn’t get warm enough to melt much, so we still have the snow. It was a very wet snow that clung to the tree branches, so it looks like a winter wonderland. There is only a slight chance that we will get more snow in the next week, so Sam and Jonah worked hard today to enjoy the moment. They went sledding in the backyard. Sam finally came in, but Jonah just kept going. And then he went out after his nap and went sledding in the twilight. It gets dark about an hour earlier here than in South Carolina, so by 4:30 pm the sun has set. But that didn’t deter Jonah. When we asked him how he was going to see to sled in the dark, he just looked up, snapped those eyes, and said, “Flashlight.”

We made progress on the painting project today, but after putting one coat on the dining room walls, Heather decided that the color is just too light. She works in the morning, but after that she will go get a slightly darker paint and we will continue. I spent a great deal of my day doing one of my favorite things–holding Oliver while he naps. He has had a long string of colds and ear infections. He seems to be feeling better now, but his sleeping habits have all gone pear-shaped. So lucky for me, I get to hold him. A highlight of today was when Sam and Jonah were playing in the living room in their kitchen. They decided to set up a restaurant and decorate it for Christmas. Then Sam, all by himself, made a sign for the restaurant. He called it, “Ollie’s By the Sea.” My mother’s name was Ollie, and all of her grandchildren have often talked about opening a family-style resort by the ocean with that name. Now Sam and Jonah have an extra incentive as their little brother is Ollie. But I was most impressed with Sam’s writing. When he started kindergarten, he could write his name but nothing else. Now he can sound things out and write all on his own. We also had a fun time just after lunch when Sam and Jonah were singing with the karaoke machine we got Jonah for Christmas. He loves the microphone and still belts out the Star Spangled Banner better than anyone else I have ever heard, but when Sam uses the microphone, Jonah just finds anything nearby that approximates the shape and sings away. Today that was the receiver from an old-style telephone. Too funny. Jed made beef stew for dinner tonight and it was by far the best beef stew I have ever had. I think the key is that he used more than one bottle of wine. It was yummy. And after dinner we watched a great video with the kids. It is called Oceans, done by Disney, and is live footage of life in the ocean. Needless to say, we enjoyed that.
