Day 53, Year 8: Quiet Boxing Day
Date: Wednesday, December 26, 2012
Weather: Rain Showers and Thunderstorms with Wind, Then Sunshine
Location: Lightkeepers Marina in Coquina Harbor, Little River, SC

It was a quiet Boxing Day here. The morning and early afternoon weather was
wicked and all you wanted to do was just stay inside and keep dry. I spent
part of the day wondering why it is called Boxing Day, but when I looked
that up on Wikipedia I learned that the etymology of the word ‘boxing’ is
just not clear. It has something to do with boxes filled with money or gifts
given to people after Christmas. It is a national holiday in the UK and
Ireland and not something most Americans know about. My favorite definition
has to do with great sailing ships. It is said that when these ships left
port they carried aboard a large box filled with money. If the voyage was
successful, the money was distributed to poor people at Christmas.

Patsy and Joe left during the torrent, but I decided to stay put and wait
for the rain to stop. I needed to bake another twelve pounds of granola, so
I spent a quiet afternoon by myself making granola and doing a couple of
computer projects that are long overdue. Then this evening I went to the Lee
and Lynda Kaufman’s for dinner. We had left-over Turducken and it was really
good-very tasty and moist. And even better than the food was the
conversation. I loved getting to know Seth and Josh again, this time as
adults, and it was fun getting to know their partners Lisa and Christie. We
talked about everything from the number of microbreweries in Ashville, North
Carolina, to Komodo dragons. It was a great evening.
