Day 44, Year 8: Messing About
Date: Monday, December 17, 2012
Weather: Overcast with Occasional Rain; High Mid 60’s, Low Upper 50’s
Location: Lightkeepers Marina in Coquina Harbor, Little River, SC

The weather was on the dreary side today and I think it fogged our brains.
We had a good day but didn’t really get much accomplished. I am STILL
working on getting Christmas presents ordered and others sent in the mail.
Most of our gifts to kids and grandkids have been ordered online but there
are a few stragglers and they seem to be taking an enormous amount of time.
I think Amazon has spoiled us. We took the Dominiques shopping for Space
Bags this morning. These are the large plastic bags that can be vacuum
packed using your vacuum cleaner hose. We went to Walmart to get these
things and were in total shock at the gun and ammunition display just
adjacent to the area where we found the bags (and just one aisle away from
the toy department). Dominique and Dominique were surprised to see that it
is so easy to buy a gun in this country. In France you can purchase guns,
but only in a dedicated gun shop after fulfilling certain requirements.
Until Walmart takes guns and ammunition out of their stores, I will not
return there. And I think more Americans are going to have to take this
kind of stand if we really want a safer, healthier environment for our
children. In the afternoon we went to KEA to make a phone call to a
marina in Florida for the Doms. They want to have their boat hauled to have
the bottom painted in early January in St. Augustine, and it was much easier
for us to make the phone call because of the language barrier. I think
Dominique and Dominique speak wonderful English, but there is a constant
need to check the definition of words. That is difficult on the phone. We
couldn’t get all of the answers we needed but we have been promised a return
call and an email with the details. In the late afternoon, we went to my
sister Patsy’s to do a laundry and we ended up having dinner there. Three
Christmas presents arrived from Amazon while we were there and I once again
felt assaulted by an unnecessary reference to violence. On the outside of
one of the boxes, a video game called Assassins Creed was advertised. I’m
going to have to contact Amazon about this. It might be an innocent game,
but I don’t like the name and don’t need it plastered on a box containing a
Christmas gift.
