Day 32, Year 8: Feels a Lot Like Home
Date: Thursday, December 6, 2012
Weather: Partly to Mostly Cloudy with Temp Dropping
Location: Lightkeeper’s Marina in Coquina Harbor, Little River, SC

The northeast winds are blowing through bringing a chill to the air. It’s
10 to 15 degrees cooler than it was last night and it is beginning to feel a
lot like home in Woods Hole-at least the way Woods Hole felt when we left
there the first of November. But it is 48 degrees here tonight and 34
degrees there, and after tonight, the temperature here goes back up for the
next week. So we’ll take what we are getting for weather with no
complaints.

We had a reprieve from the condensation problem for the past few days while
it was so warm, but tonight as the temperature is dropping, the problem is
back. We searched the internet today to find the best dehumidifier for the
money. We found one that we liked, the Soleus Air 30 Pint Portable Energy
Star, but there are none available in stores here and Amazon is Out of
Stock. So we took that as a cue to just continue on without one. For years
we have used DampRid, a product with moisture absorbing crystals, in our
larger storage areas, so we will now just increase our use of that product
and hope it is up to the job. But we did spend more time on this issue
today by having someone come out to check out our reverse-cycle heater and
air conditioner thinking that if it were working, it would circulate air
which should help decrease condensation. This unit has not been working
since our return to the US in June of 2011, and when we had someone come
work on the unit when we were in Fiddler’s Cove last winter, we almost ended
up with a fire from a short in the control box a few hours later. The
marina office recommended Rico and he came this afternoon to take a look at
the system. He determined that the compressor is no good, probably burned
out from the short last winter. So there is no quick or cheap fix. We
liked Rico and asked him to get quotes on a new compressor and a whole new
unit. I doubt that we will do anything about this right away, but when we
get rich, we might get it fixed. Don’t hold your breath.

Tonight we had Zsanic and Scott and their 20 month-old Kaylin over for
dinner. They live on a sailboat on the adjoining dock and have dreams of
cruising. We really enjoyed getting to know them. And we so enjoyed having
a wee one onboard once again. Kaylin is adorable, but we had to laugh at
her love of taking off her clothes. We thought it was just our grandsons
who love nothing better than stripping off their clothes, but Kaylin is
right in there with them.
