Day 138, Year 8: Happy 1st Birthday, Ollie
Date: Thursday March 21, 2013
Weather: Partly Sunny, Windy, and Downright Cold in the AM
Location: At Home with Patsy and Joe, Calabash, NC
Happy 1st birthday to our grandson Oliver Preston Goldstone. We had a Skype video call with Heather and Ollie this afternoon and it made me the happiest grandmother ever. Heather called from the computer located at one end of the sofa and when I answered, I could see Ollie at the other end. He turned toward the computer, squealed with delight, and hurried over to the computer trying to touch the screen. I’m sure he would have done this no matter who was on the screen, but I choose to pretend that he recognized Oma and came running to say hello. Mark was in the other room and even he came running to see what was going on as Ollie continued to squeal with delight. He was Mr. Smiley today and I could actually see his upper and lower teeth. Later in the evening, Heather and Jed called back so we could see Oliver using the push toy we got him for his birthday and so we could see Sam and Jonah enjoying their Big Brother gifts. It wasn’t the same as being there, but it was great to see the Goldstones Three in action. As I have with the first three grandchildren, I embroidered a pair of Osh Kosh Overalls for Ollie (photo attached). Happy Birthday, Ollie!

Now on to an update on Patsy. As Joe said this afternoon, “The plot thickens.” Patsy didn’t sleep very well last night because she was so uncomfortable from feeling bloated. Then when she got up, she realized that her legs and feet were even more swollen than when she left the hospital yesterday. That prompted a call to her surgeon in Charleston and that led to a trip to the Emergency Room here to get an ultra-sound to check for a blood clot in her legs. Thankfully that was not the problem, but they discovered that she has pneumonia and edema (retention of water). She is now on an antibiotic for the pneumonia and a diuretic to get rid of the fluid. She is still feeling fine and taking all of this without complaint, but I’m sure the continued emergence of problems is going to grow old soon. So hope with me that we have a good night tonight and a better day tomorrow.
