Day 134, Year 8: Happy St. Patrick’s Day
Date: Sunday March 17, 2013
Weather: Partly Cloudy Turning Overcast, Windy, Warm (70’s)
Location: MUSC Hospital, Room 564, Charleston, SC

Here’s hoping you had a lucky St. Patrick’s Day. We drove back to Charleston this morning and spent the day here in Patsy’s hospital room. She did not have the luck of the Irish today as there has been another little set-back. After three teams of doctors assessed her situation, they decided they needed to order an x-ray of the lower GI tract to see if there is a bowel blockage. ‘Stuff’ is coming up but nothing is going down. No one has gotten back to us with the results of the x-ray, so the nurse if assuming that they didn’t find a blockage. But I am staying with her in her room tonight in hopes of talking to the doctors in the morning. They come in very early, so in order to talk with them you need to be here. In the meantime, they have put a tube through Patsy’s nose and down into her stomach to pump it out and relieve some of the pressure. Even though she hasn’t eaten enough to keep a tiny bird alive since last Wednesday, she still has the energy to walk the halls and she still has a sense of humor and a good attitude. I’m afraid I might be a bit testier if someone put a tube up my nose! Hope with me that I will be able to report a more positive situation tomorrow night.

The weather was very warm and pleasant today. We enjoyed the ride down here and then had a nice visit with Judy Thompson who drove down to see Patsy. Tomorrow morning I have to drive back to Little River for an appointment with an orthopedic doctor. I did something to my upper left arm on the return plane trip from Boston in January, and it just not getting better. I don’t remember doing anything to injure it, but I do remember pulling my carry-on case behind me on the plane and getting it caught which gave my arm a bit of a jerk. It really seemed like nothing at the time but the pain in my arm at times tells me differently. The urgent care doctor that I have been to twice now says it is tendonitis, but he thinks I should see the orthopedic doctor and get an x-ray to make sure it is not something more serious. So I’ll drive up and back down here to spend tomorrow night. We just have to take things one day a time until we can get Patsy back home. So until then, I think we’ll be keeping the road from here to Calabash busy.
I’ll take this opportunity to share some recent photos of the Big 5. Oliver gets the cover pic because he is eating a green artichoke on St. Patrick’s Day. He knows his Oma loves artichokes. But make sure you click on his picture so you can see the others—some in green, some in no clothes, some goofing off, and some sleeping like angels.
