Day 128, Year 8: Hanging Out at Patsy and Joe’s
Date: Monday March 11, 2013
Weather: Partly Cloudy, Temp in the High 60’s F
Location: Lightkeepers Marina in Coquina Harbor, Little River, SC
Today was one of those days that just slipped away. But sometimes, it is important to have that kind of day. We spent the day at my sister Patsy’s just hanging out. She found out in January that she has uterine cancer and tomorrow she leaves for Charleston, South Carolina, where she will have surgery on Thursday at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) hospital. I haven’t mentioned this in my logs as I wanted to give Patsy time to tell all of her friends and family personally, but the time has come to share the information. I was with her in January when her doctor told her about the cancer. As the doctor put it, “The bad news is that you do have cancer, but the good news is that it has been identified very early.” If all is as the doctors believe, Patsy will have robotic surgery on Thursday to remove the uterus and be home by the weekend. If a biopsy proves the doctors’ thinking to be true, she will need no further treatment. She feels good and has a wonderful attitude and we are expecting to be able to report in a few days that all is well. In the meantime, we will be house sitting at Patsy and Joe’s for a couple of nights while Patsy (and Joe with her) will be undergoing pre-op testing and preparation. On Thursday morning, we will head to Charleston and stay there until we know things are fine. My sister is one tough lady and I know she is going to be just fine. But just the same, we appreciate you sending your most positive thoughts her way on Thursday. So now you can see why just hanging about today was important to both Mark and to me. We have had a wonderful time here in the Carolinas with Patsy and Joe this winter and are so glad that we are here at this time.
Tomorrow we get to see our Australian friends, Chris and Geoff of Shambala, once again. We went to see them in Beaufort just before going to Florida and we thought they had set sail for the Bahamas. But we got a call today that they are just now getting this far south and are anchored only a couple of miles away. We will get together tomorrow morning and find out why they were delayed in their departure and where they are headed next. So stay tuned for that up date.
