Day 126, Year 8: S&PS St. Pat’s Dinner
Date: Saturday March 9, 2013
Weather: Warm and Windy with Bright Sunshine
Location: Lightkeepers Marina in Coquina Harbor, Little River, SC
Is it a slider or a cooter? Or maybe a painted turtle? I’ve definitely lost my knack for identifying species of plants and animals I encounter. Today we saw turtles sunning themselves by the little pond next the marina office and I just was not sure what kind of turtle I was seeing. What I was sure of is that this is the very first day they have come up to sun themselves and that tells me they think spring is on the way. Tonight we ‘spring forward’ and lose an hour not to be regained until late fall. But the length of the day will seem longer and we like that.
Tonight we went the March meeting of the North Strand Sail & Power Squadron and became official members. The group here is a lot of fun and we are hoping we can find a similar group when we return to the Cape. We learned tonight that the original power squadron was formed as part of the Boston Yacht Club around 1910. A member of the BYC purchased a power boat to tow his sail boat and became such a believer in the importance of power boats that in 1912 the Power Division of the Boston Yacht Club was formed. Most members of the squadron here are power boaters, but there are enough sailors to make us feel at home. We had an early St. Patrick’s Day dinner tonight with cabbage and corned beef and beef in green bottles to wash it down.
