Day 121, Year 8: Happy Birthday, Joe
Date: Monday March 4, 2013
Weather: Sunny, Still Cool
Location: Lightkeepers Marina in Coquina Harbor, Little River, SC
Today we celebrated my brother-in-law Joe’s birthday. Happy Birthday, Joe. I started by baking key lime pies for tonight’s dessert. Then Mark and I went to Patsy and Joe’s to pick them up and go a yet another movie. Patsy and Joe’s best friends, Al and Lou, arrived late yesterday, so they went with us to the movie. This time we went to see Quartet. What a fabulous movie about aging. As is quoted many times from Bette Davis, “Getting Old isn’t for sissies.” But if you ever do have to go to a nursing home, let it be like the one in Quartet. Maggie Smith’s performance was wonderful (as usual). And the thing that is so special about this movie is that many of the people in the film play themselves—great musicians growing older. Definitely worth seeing.
Once we returned from the movie, we had hoped to be able to show Al and Lou photos from our trip around the world. But we discovered that we didn’t have the right cords to connect our computer to Patsy and Joe’s TV monitor. Hours later, following a trip to Walmart to buy a connector, we were finally able to show them a short video clip from our voyage. But in getting that set-up, power to Patsy and Joe’s sunroom was simply lost. Mark could not find a breaker box for the sun porch (added after the house was built) anywhere. We’ll continue that quest tomorrow. But we did have a great dinner and evening with Patsy and Joe and Al and Lou. Joe grilled fresh salmon filets and shrimp and both were fabulous. It was great to get to visit with Al and Lou after so many years and to enjoy a great birthday dinner together.

Note: My mother, Ollie Lillian Biggs Martin, was born on this day 105 years ago. As always, Mom, we were thinking of you.
