Day 56, Year 7: Ducks in a Row
Date: Tuesday, January 3, 2012
Weather: Windy and Very Cold, Low Tonight 15-20 degrees F
Location: Brewer Fiddler’s Cove Marina, N Falmouth, Massachusetts

Today was all about getting our ‘ducks in a row’ for Mark’s upcoming surgery. Mass General Hospital (MGH) was officially closed yesterday so we had to wait until today to talk with the surgeon’s assistant to get details about preparation, arrival time, etc. We processed the information and decided that we will stay here on Thursday during the time that Mark has to ‘prep’ for the operation and then head to Boston around 5 pm on Thursday evening. Jed’s Aunt Sue and Uncle John live in Cambridge and have basically insisted that we use their house as our home away from home for the surgery. So we will spend Thursday night with them, get up very early on Friday morning, and get to MGH by 6 am. I talked with Sue today and she assures me that I can come and go at any hour while Mark is in the hospital. We are so grateful for their hospitality as it will make the stay in Boston much nicer than having to stay in a hotel. Heather insists that she is coming up on Friday morning and tonight I talked with my good friend Linda Stuart in Concord and she and her son Garrett who is home from college for Christmas break are also planning to come to Boston on Friday. Soooooooo, if Mark’s cold doesn’t cause the surgery to be cancelled we are all set. Tomorrow he goes to Boston for the pre-operation testing and will meet with the anesthesiologist. That is the person that will determine whether or not the cold will cause the surgery to be delayed. Linda has a suggestion for a ‘miracle’ tea that I am going to go buy and fix for Mark in the AM. She swears it will make him better ASAP. At this point, I’m willing to try anything that can keep the surgery on schedule.

I left Mark on Windbird to get more rest this afternoon while I went to pick Sam and Jonah up from school. After their naps, they went with me to get Mark and to pick up sushi take-out for dinner. This was a special dinner for granddad as he will not be with the boys again for a week or two if the operation is a go on Friday. In addition to getting his favorite food, sushi, granddad and I got a couple of late Christmas presents from Sam and Jonah. We got a framed photo of them and some special art work, fish prints, from each.

We have our ducks in a row if the surgery on Friday is a go-ahead. Fortunately, the frigid weather we are experiencing tonight and tomorrow will start warming up by Thursday. The temperatures for the weekend are projected to be much warmer so we won’t have to worry about leaving Windbird. I have to drive from Boston back to the Cape on Monday morning for an appointment for a physical exam. I scheduled the appointment in July and had to wait this long to get it, so I’m not about to cancel and wait six more months. But coming down on Monday will give me a chance to check on the boat while I am here. By the middle to the end of the week, we should be back home, so all should be fine here. Now all we have to do is just hope that things can go ahead as scheduled.
