Day 294, Year 7: All About Tomatoes
Date: Tuesday, August 28, 2012
Weather: Rain Overnight and During the Morning, Mostly Cloudy Afternoon
Location: Eel Pond, Woods Hole, Massachusetts

Last week Heather and I processed 30 pounds of tomatoes, then 20 pounds, and now today 45 pounds. We would have to do this total volume again to even begin to reach the goal of having enough marinara sauce to make it through the winter, but regardless, we are going to shut down the tomato factory tomorrow and turn our attention to other end-of-summer activities. Trying to supply yourself with local food grown organically is no easy task. But we do feel we made a valiant effort. And today, we had to pick the tomatoes in the rain while Sam and Jonah played in the rain and Granddad walked about with Oliver in the stroller. So we think we should get extra points for that.

It has finally dawned upon us that summer really is coming to a close. And we still haven’t finished our early spring job list. I haven’t sanded and varnished the teak on Windbird and the stainless hasn’t been polished this season. We need to get the batteries taken into a place to have them equalized, and the list goes on. All of this is complicated by the fact that Mark starts back to work on a regular schedule tomorrow. At least through September, it looks like he will be working Wednesday through Saturday of each week. So September is going to be a busy time.
