Day 351, Year 6: All Around Martha’s Vineyard
Date: Monday, October 10, 2011
Weather: Still Sunny and Warm, Winds W 15
Location: Eel Pond, Woods Hole, Massachusetts

This weather is simply fantastic. We had yet another warm, sunny day and another great sail. But before sailing across the Vineyard Sound to get back home, we went ashore and hopped on a bus to Edgartown. Edgartown is on the east side of the island and was the first colonial settlement on the island. Its homes and businesses have been well preserved. We walked down the main street to the harbor and investigated the possibility of taking the ferry to Chappaquiddick to see a Japanese garden there. What we found out is that there are no businesses and no public transportation on the island, so we would have to walk the three miles to garden. It sounds like a great all day adventure, but we didn’t have time for that today. We then meandered through the streets lined with stately homes on the way back to the bus stop. We then traveled about twenty miles to Gay Head on the far west side of the island. The bus ride from Edgartown gave us a chance to see a part of the island we had not visited before. I finally understood why so many people find this island so charming. There was very little development, the countryside is beautiful, and the cliffs at Gay Head (Aquidnik) provide a dramatic drop down to the water. It is really beautiful. Then we took the bus back to the tiny community of Chilmark where we got off the bus and walked a mile and half to the old fishing village of Menemsha. It is a tiny village with lots of charm and not much else. But that’s what makes it so charming. Businesses were closing for the winter, but we found a place to have a great seafood lunch before making our way back to Vineyard Haven. We headed for Woods Hole and had yet another great sail. The weekend weather gave Tom and Kitty lots of sailing experience and we feel good about that. It has been just like cruising again.

We left Kitty and Tom in Woods Hole to fend for themselves while we went to Heather and Jed’s to have dinner with Jed’s parents, Donald and Marti. It was great to see them again, but the time was much too short. Hopefully we’ll be able to spend more time with them in the spring.
