Day 346, Year 6: Changeable Weather
Date: Wednesday, October 5, 2011
Weather: Beautiful Morning; Afternoon Rain Storm; Windy
Location: Eel Pond, Woods Hole, Massachusetts
We don’t seem to be having the same kind of weather for more than a few hours these days. It was windy and rained during the night, but the morning was absolutely beautiful. It was a few degrees cooler today than it has been, but still nice. I took Mark to our daughter Heather’s this morning and then Heather and I went shopping. She is giving a keynote address at a function in Provincetown this Sunday and she needed something appropriate to wear. As I said this weekend when I went shopping for clothes, the Cape is not the place to do it. But The Gap that is in the mall about twenty minutes north of Falmouth worked perfectly for Heather. We were back by 11:30 am and then Mark and I took off to get him to work at West Marine. He was working 12-5 today. I then went to Woods Hole to pick up the boys from school and we spent the afternoon on the boat. It was so beautiful when we were coming across the pond in the dinghy, but by the time the boys were ready for a nap, the wind was howling and Windbird was swaying in the wind as the rain storm approached. The storm passed quickly so that by the time I was leaving with the boys to pick Mark up from work and take them home, the sun was once again shining. It is cool tonight and will be so again tomorrow night, but then the temp is supposed to start rising. By Sunday we are supposed to have unseasonable warm weather with temps in the high 70’s. The weather is up and down-and we love it when it is UP. As long as we keep having warm daytime temperatures, we’re happy.
Tomorrow we will be getting ready for company, both here on Windbird and at Heather and Jed’s. Jed’s parents arrive on Friday and will be spending the long weekend before returning to their winter home in Washington, DC. They spend the summers at their home in Boothbay, Maine, but it is time to head south. We are getting ready to have Tom and Kitty Livingston from Baltimore aboard for the three-day weekend. They arrive by train in Providence on Friday morning and I will be going to pick them up. Mark works on Friday, so Tom, Kitty, and I will do some sight seeing, do the last minute shopping, pick Mark up from work, and then come back to Windbird to get her ready for the sail to Nantucket. Tom and Kitty have never been to Cape Cod, so it will be a fun weekend introducing them Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket and to sailing aboard Windbird. The weekend weather looks gorgeous, but that means we might have light winds. I guess you can’t have it all, but you never know around here. Maybe we can have gorgeous, warm weather and moderate winds for sailing. We’re not looking forward to months of no sailing during the winter, so a great sailing weekend would be such a joy.
