Day 333, Year 6: Day of Accomplishments
Date: Thursday, September 22, 2011
Weather: Overcast and Rainy, Temp in Low 70’s
Location: Eel Pond, Woods Hole, Massachusetts
The garden shed now has shingles on the roof, so Mark’s work on the shed is done. Jed needs to put the battens on the front and back of the shed and attach the ramp, and then it can be filled with all the garden tools, the lawn mower, etc. Yesterday when we were talking about putting on the shingles, Jonah started singing ‘Shingle Bells’. I said something about ‘rocks’ and that changed the song to “Shingle Bell, Shingle Bell, Shingle Bell, Rock”-our celebration song for the shed’s completion.
After days of going back and forth from Blue Water to BoatUS about our boat insurance, we finally got all the answers we needed to make our decision. We are going with BoatUS because it will cost us about $600 less and they have made it possible for us to wait until spring to have the boat hauled for an out-of-water survey. We will get an in-water survey done next week and that will suffice until next spring. We found a BoatUS-approved surveyor who will do the in-water survey now and then come back to complete the hull survey in the spring for no extra charge. We were all geared up to come out of the water next week, but it makes much more sense to wait until spring so new bottom paint doesn’t just sit there all winter. Now we can focus on some of the interior issues and decide what we will do about covering the boat for the winter.
The next thing that needs to happen is that we need to get rid of these colds. Working outside in the drizzly rain today probably didn’t help Mark’s situation, but he was determined to get that shed finished. Jonah still has a cold and now Sam is getting it. With little ones in day care, one of us will probably have a cold all winter, so we just need to do everything we can to build up our immune systems.
I’ll end tonight’s log with the definition of a town. This afternoon Heather called and said she had been on the outer Cape all day and would be home around 5 pm. After hanging up the phone, I asked Sam if he knew where on the outer Cape she went. He said he thought she went to Wellfleet and then he continued to explain that Wellfleet has a dock and an ice-cream store. He said he didn’t know if there was anything else there, but because it has an ice cream store and a dock, it is a town. I love the logic of four year-olds and I like Sam’s definition of a town.
