Day 319, Year 6: More of the Same-Rain, Rain
Date: Thursday, September 8, 2011
Weather: Same, Same–Overcast, Rainy, and Cool
Location: Eel Pond, Woods Hole, Massachusetts

A burst of sunshine graced our presence this afternoon, but it quickly turned back into total cloud cover and more rain. We had a couple of claps of thunder mid-day that seemed to shake the boat with lightening to go with it. The rain in the afternoon was certainly less than the morning, but it just doesn’t feel like September. The temp hovers around 70 during the day and 60 at night and with no sunshine, it feels cooler than that. Hurricane Katia will pass by us tonight a couple of hundred miles offshore, but she must be causing some of this ugly weather. We’ll start keeping an eye on Tropical Storm Maria in the Caribbean, but we’ll hope she’s not headed in our direction. We need a break from this ugly weather!

Mark didn’t work at West Marine today, but he did work all day on Windbird. He ran new heavy-duty battery cable directly from the alternator to the batteries. Before the cable went through a battery switch at the Navigation Table in the main cabin which added multiple connections and a lengthy run of cable. The alternator is on the engine in the back cabin and the batteries are in the back cabin as well, so now the run is much shorter. Unfortunately, running the new cable didn’t solve the problem. So now Mark is tracking down the possibility that the voltage regulator is bad. But he works at West Marine for the next two days so we will just have to keep running the engine multiple times a day to keep the power flowing.

We picked Sam and Jonah up from school at 1 o’clock and brought them to Windbird for the third day in a row. They seem to be enjoying the change of location in the afternoons and both are taking good naps. We love being able to walk to pick them up and they love getting to see their momma sooner than they would if we were back in East Falmouth. Heather works right here in Woods Hole, so as soon as she is finished with work, she calls and we go pick her up. This will only last until the end of October when we move Windbird to a different location, but we’ll enjoy it while we can.
