Day 308, Year 6: Farewell, Irene
Date: Sunday, August 28, 2011
Weather: Gusty, Super Windy Day; Very Little Rain
Location: Eel Pond, Woods Hole, Massachusetts
Irene gave Cape Cod a break. She hit the New Jersey coast early this morning and thend moved northward as a tropical storm. By 7:45 am, we started getting the wind, and although we had some rain, it nothing like we expected. The winds were a pretty steady 30-35 knots all day with gusts in the 50’s, so we have lots of tree limbs down and no electricity but all is fine. It is still windy twelve hours later, but it does feel like it is beginning to subside.
We spent the night at Heather and Jed’s and are still there, but we have made two trips to Woods Hole today to see Windbird from shore. Mark went early this morning and then we both went right at sundown tonight. Conditions seemed a lot scarier in Woods Hole than here in East Falmouth, but we watched Windbird and she was her steady self. Other boats were heeling in the gusts, but Windbird just stood stoically, turning ever so slightly in the gusts. I have to make this short since we have no electricity, so we’ll post photos and write a longer description tomorrow night. For now, we feel so relieved and hope that others that were in Irene’s path are recovering.

So thankful to hear that Windbird rode out the storm with no problems! Glad to hear you all are well, too. Irene brought lots of rain and wind to us here in southern Maine, but nothing too serious. A few tree branches down, loss of phone/internet/ and cable TV, but power stayed on. My kids in the Bangor area lost power for a day, but they have a generator, and a new sump pump, so no worries about flooded basements and such.
