Day 299, Year 6: Working on a Possible Solution
Date: Friday, August 19, 2011
Weather: Warming Up, 84 degrees F
Location: Eel Pond, Woods Hole, Massachusetts

We’re still working on a solution to getting our holding tank pumped out. Yesterday when the Falmouth Harbor Master had no suggestions for us, we weren’t sure what to do. But we made calls today and found that there are pump out facilities at the dock in Falmouth. We then called Martha’s Vineyard and found that they have three pump out boats–one in Vineyard Haven, one in Oak Bluffs, and one in Edgartown. Supposedly if we sail there and give a call, they will come right out. How very different that is from this side of the sound where there is one boat for many harbors and the boat can never come just when you call. We’ll probably sail to Vineyard Haven tomorrow, get pumped out, and then return to Woods Hole for the night. Or we might spend the night, but we are just anxious to get pumped out and then get to work on fixing the problem. And that’s probably better done where we can quickly get to land to buy additional supplies for the fix if needed. Hopefully by Sunday we will have this issue worked out.

We are also working with Heather and Jed in designing and planning the building of a garden storage shed for them. We’re still at the point of getting estimates to decide if it is cheaper to build your own from scratch or to buy one of the kits that you put together. The estimate I got from the local lumber company today for the materials needed to build an 8 foot by 10 foot shed was about $1500. You can buy a kit for $1800. Now Heather and Jed just have to look at the fine print on the kits and find out if the quality of materials is comparable to building your own from scratch. If so, the kit will probably win. But the estimate we had on materials from two years ago was almost half of the current estimate, so they also have to figure out if they can afford the additional amount. Mark works Monday but then doesn’t work again for most of next week. It’s a perfect time for a building project if decisions can be made that fast.
