Day 292, Year 6 Another Truly Gorgeous Day
Date: Friday, August 12, 2011
Weather: Sunny, Clear Blue Skies, Mid-70’s
Location: Eel Pond, Woods Hole, Massachusetts
The weather is beautiful and there are enough tourists here to attest to that fact. The Cape is crawling with summertime visitors. Every time the bridge opens in Woods Hole you can read the graffiti painted on the underside of the bridge, “Summer people, some are not.” And right now the summer people are here in droves. And with such gorgeous weather, who can blame them? I guess I should just feel lucky that I live here and don’t have to fight the traffic to visit here. On Sunday, the Falmouth Road Race begins here in Woods Hole. There will be 10,000 runners arriving by bus early on Sunday morning and then running the seven-mile beach course into Falmouth. I really can’t imagine 10,000 people in little Woods Hole, so I am going to be an interested observer.
Tomorrow and Sunday are tax free days in Massachusetts. This means that anything you buy is tax free. Being from “Live Free or Die and Tax Free” New Hampshire, the idea of not paying a 6 to 7 per cent tax is most inviting. West Marine is gearing up for the tax-free weekend and today any merchandise that has been stored away or is now out-dated was put out for sale at greatly reduced prices. Fortunately or unfortunately, they unearthed a Force-10 galley stove. And the price set for sale is almost unbelievable. Evidently someone ordered it about a year ago, didn’t pick it up, and now they need to get rid of it. Our galley stove works but is not very reliable. Baking is really tricky as it is almost impossible to control the temperature and getting the oven lit is a true challenge. Mark thinks it is more of a problem than I do, but buying a $1700 stove for $400 is just a little too tempting. We’re supposed to be trying to make money, not spend it, but a deal like this is a little hard to pass up. So I’ll take Mark to work in the morning and check out the stove. By tomorrow evening, I might be poorer but have an updated galley.

My father, brother and niece will be running the Falmouth Road Race.
