Day 290, Year 6 Welcoming Josh to New England
Date: Wednesday, August 10, 2011
Weather: Beautiful Day
Location: Eel Pond, Woods Hole, Massachusetts

I just got off the phone with my brother’s oldest grandson, Josh. Josh graduated from Appalachian State in North Carolina this spring, worked as an intern in a law office in Raleigh, North Carolina, for the summer, and is now beginning his year-long experience with AmeriCorps in Manchester, New Hampshire. I called him to invite him to spend Labor Weekend with us here in Woods Hole. Josh is going to be working with teenagers in trouble. If my brother were still alive, I know he would be so proud that Josh is dedicating this year of his life to help those less fortunate than himself. And we are so glad that we are close enough to have him visit on holiday weekends and to connect him with friends in New Hampshire. I talked to my sister-in-law Conda after talking to Josh. She has all the apprehensions that any grandmother would have when a grandchild first strikes out on his/her own, but I just let her know that he is now in our “territory” and we’ll do everything we can to make sure he feels at home here in New England.

Today was a West Marine work day for Mark and a Granny Nanny day for me. When we got back to Windbird this evening there were two sailboats rafted up on a mooring next to us. The captains from the two boats, Analgesic and Ariel, came over to visit with us. Doug and Brian are both from the Boston area, one from Hull and one from Hingham. They sailed into Eel Pond today on a yearly cruise south. They both have teenagers onboard that are good friends as they have sailed together for a number of years. It was great talking with them about their sailing adventures here locally and in the Caribbean and to talk about our around the world adventures. They invited us to come to their yacht clubs to make presentations or to just bring our boat north to the Boston area and stay at their yacht clubs as visitors.

Tomorrow Mark gets to spend the whole day on Windbird but he will be doing public radio work. At this point that means he gets to talk to good friends picking their brains on a particular topic and just catching up on what’s been going on in the past six years. He’s truly enjoying the chance to do this. And I’ll be home for the morning and then off to do the Granny Nanny job.

One really good thing happened today-Andy who repairs sewing machines picked up our SailRite machine to make repairs. Hopefully we’ll have a repaired machine back within a week and we can start doing our canvas repair jobs.
