Day 98, Year 10: Touring the Town of West Palm Beach
Date: Friday, January 16, 2015
Weather: Partly Sunny, Windy, and Cooler—High in the 60’s F
Location: Anchored Between the City Docks in West Palm Beach, FL
Today we continued to take advantage of the wonderful free transportation here in West Palm Beach. This morning we took the free trolley out to City Place with Lee to go to SEE Eyewear to have our glasses repaired. Lee needed his frames tightened and I needed to have the plastic piece that goes around my ear reattached. The young women did her best with Lee’s problem, but she couldn’t fix mine. She recommended that I find a jeweler that can solder my two pieces together. But for now, I will just keep reattaching the piece when it disconnects. Mark and I were then planning to take the Arts & Entertainment (A&E) District free trolley to do its loop to see more of the city. BUT about that time the sun came out and Mark remembered that he had forgotten his hat. He really can’t be without it in the sun unless he has on sunscreen and he didn’t have that with him either. The cancer treatment he is receiving makes his skin very sensitive to UV and his ‘safari’ hat does the job. But he does have to have it with him. So back to the boat we went. By this time it was almost noon so we had lunch before venturing out again. We ended up walking the 1.3 miles to the CVS pharmacy to pick up the remainder of a prescription that they were not able to fill when we walked there on Wednesday. On our way back to town, we hopped on the A&E trolley and rode all around West Palm and across the Royal Palm Bridge to Palm Beach. The trolley stopped at the Society of Four Arts just across the bridge and then went to the Flagler Museum. We had hoped to get off and walk back to West Palm, but there is a lot of construction on the Flagler Bridge and on our earlier investigations, we had not found a way to walk across. Our trolley driver assured us we could, but we were afraid to take the chance. As we drove back across the bridge, the driver showed us the ‘trick’ to walking across, so maybe we’ll try it tomorrow. We had a little time to wait before a 4 pm West Palm Beach tour we had booked earlier in the day, so we went to a sushi place and had a yellowtail, scallion, and asparagus roll with a beer–yummm. Then we met up with Lynda and Lee and did the trolley tour. It was difficult to understand the tour guide, but we did learn a little more about the city’s history. We had dinner in town before returning to the boat and once again got to enjoy the night lights in West Palm. We have one more day here before we up anchor and move back north a couple of miles to anchor near the Lake Worth Inlet. Then on Monday morning we will head outside to sail down to Fort Lauderdale. The adventure continues.
