Day 71, Year 10: Enjoying the Beach While Getting Ready for Christmas
Date: Saturday, December 20, 2014
Weather: Beautiful, Sunny Day, Temp in the 80’s F (70’s at night)
Location: Visiting with Justin, Jo, Ziggy, and Coco in Aguada, PR
We’re managing to enjoy time at the beach and still spend time getting ready for Christmas. I spent the morning wrapping gifts and right after lunch we walked down to the beach with the pony and all four dogs. This beach is not used by a lot of people, so it is like our own little private beach. We are lucky that low tide is mid-day right now, so we have a sandy beach, our little pools of water protected by the inner reef, and the crashing waves further offshore. At high tide those waves are crashing on the beach and it is not the same little kid friendly environment. I’m going to have to walk down early, early one morning to see what the beach is like at high tide. But today we frolicked in the pools of calm water and Justin and Jo ventured further out to do some bodyboarding. It was windier today, making it feel a bit chilly when the sun went behind a cloud, but overall we had a delightful time. Mid-afternoon we walked into town to pick up the car which needed some additional work done on the power steering. It was repaired a couple of weeks ago but was still leaking. Hopefully today’s work solved the problem. But since we needed to go to town, we took advantage and did a little stocking stuffer shopping, had dinner, and then went to Utopia for chocolate mousse. So, so good.
Tomorrow is a busy day. There is the Farmer’s Market in Rincon early and then a solstice celebration back here at home. Since Justin, Jo, and kids are leaving home the day after Christmas to go to England for two weeks, the kids won’t have much of a chance to play with their toys. So Justin and Jo have decided to give them their big presents tomorrow as part of the solstice celebration so they can play with them all week before traveling. Then later in the afternoon we will return to Rincon for a dinner on the beach with friends. We’ll pack in as much fun as possible on the shortest day of the year!
Thanks to our son-in-law, Jed, we now know the name of one of the forms of sea life that had us puzzled yesterday. The soft, cone-shaped plants are called Peacock’s tail algae (Padina pavonica). Slowly, but surely, we’ll find out the name of the other things.
