Day 64, Year 10: Merry, Merry Christmas Party
Date: Saturday, December 13, 2014
Weather: No Change–Mostly Sunny; High in the 50’s F, Low in the 30’s
Location: R Dock, Lightkeepers Marina, Little River, SC

Tonight we went to the Sail & Power Squadron annual Christmas party and had a merry, merry time. Everyone brought food and we had a feast. We took deviled eggs and asparagus and red peppers with a curried mayonnaise dip. The food was delicious but I must admit that my favorite was the German chocolate cake. It was sooooo good. We enjoyed the company and at the end of the evening we ended up talking with David and Kim. David is a lawyer and Kim is a law enforcement officer. They have chartered in the Bahamas and Lee and Lynda invited all of us back to their condo to continue our conversation. We learned more about sailing in the Bahamas from the perspective of charter cruisers and just generally had a good time.

141213 Day 64 Little River, USA–Sail and Power Squadron Christmas Party

The earlier part of our day was not so merry, merry. Two days ago I packed our one big bag to take on the trip to Puerto Rico. I needed Mark’s help to negotiate with the big piece of luggage in the cockpit so that I could see how much it weighed. The Spirit Airlines bag weight limit is 40 pounds. The first uh-oh was that the bag was about 45 pounds and not everything was in it. So we were going to mail some things. The second uh-oh moment came when we discovered that the luggage exceeded the size limitation. Evidently Mark misread the size limitation earlier, so now we needed to find a different bag. We called Lynda and asked if they had a bag we could borrow and in that conversation we found out the post office here in Little River is closed on Saturdays. Another really big uh-oh since we fly out of Myrtle Beach at 8 am on Monday morning giving us no opportunity to get things sent. After a moment of panic, I got on the computer to see if any other post offices in the area were open today. Luckily, there were two. Whew! So we went to Lynda’s to pick up the bag and to the post office to get a couple of Flat Rate Priority boxes and then went back to Windbird to start the packing all over again. If we were just taking our clothes, packing would have been easy. But we are taking our dive gear in case we have time to go snorkeling and a few gifts for Ziggy and Coco, thus the luggage weight and size issues. The bag we borrowed from Lee and Lynda was smaller than the one we had packed originally, so we filled it to the 40 pound limit, filled our duffle bag until it was bulging, and then we packed the two Priority boxes and headed to the PO. I had already packed one box earlier in the week, so we sent three boxes to Puerto Rico and a small box to Heather, Jed, and gang. In the past, I have been very vocal about post office hours saying that there is no reason they need to be open on Saturday. Today changed my mind on that issue!

So our bags are packed and we are almost ready to head to Puerto Rico on Monday morning. If flights are on time, we will arrive in San Juan at 3 pm and hopefully get to Justin and Jo’s new home on the west coast of PR by dinner time. We are so anxious to see them in their new environment. They have added a mama and baby goat and a few other animals since we last visited them in Culebra, so I know Coco and Ziggy will be quite busy showing us around.
