I like being the bearer of good news and I’m so happy to report that my brother-in-law Joe is back home and feeling fine. Although he thought he was having a heart attack when he had my sister call 911 yesterday, he was assured by multiple doctors this morning that there are no blockages in any of his veins or arteries and that the incident yesterday was due to general coronary heart disease. He has known about this condition for years, but as with everything else, it just gets a little worse with age. His situation is being treated medically and he can resume normal activities immediately. Mark and I went to the hospital this morning and stopped on the way to get breakfast for Patsy. She had said that an Egg McMuffin from McDonald’s would be good, so we stopped at the yellow arches and bought breakfast for her and for the two of us. Joe had already had a hospital breakfast, so Mark and I arrived in Joe’s room with a big McDonald’s bag for the rest of us. And just as we started eating, the first doctor came in to talk to Joe about his heart condition. How guilty did I feel at that moment eating some of the worst food in the world for your heart? Pretty guilty. So no more McDonald’s for any of us ever–no matter what. Well, maybe we can make an exception once in a while.
I am also happy to report that Dr. Kwak, Mark’s oncologist from Massachusetts General Hospital, called him today with her report on his recent scan. She is a very quiet, reserved personality, but today she was exuberant. She said she was absolutely amazed at how effective the panatumumab has been—that she would never have expected the results to be this good. So this made us feel even better. It’s hard to put into words just how elated we are with the recent results. Happy, happy!
As we drove home from the hospital this morning, we stopped to do shopping along the way. We needed one little thing from one store and another little thing from another. But since almost all of the shopping is on Route 17 between the hospital and here, it took us two hours to drive the 20 minutes to get home. Then it was time for Mark to help Lee. And there is more good news there. Today the rack for Sea Turtle’s solar panels and wind generator was installed, the first of the side curtains that will soon be a total cockpit enclosure were installed, and Mark and Lee got the wind generator installed on the new rack. Sea Turtle is starting to look like a cruising boat. They will continue working on Sea Turtle tomorrow while I go to Patsy and Joe’s to make MORE granola and do some other cooking. Patsy needs to go out and finish her Christmas shopping and Joe and I will hold down the home fort. Tomorrow night we have friends coming to dinner. We do find ways to keep busy.
