Day 44, Year 10: The Sky is Falling
Date: Sunday, November 23, 2014
Weather: Overcast with Rain, Daytime High in the low-70’s F
Location: R Dock, Lightkeepers Marina, Little River, SC

It has been raining since the wee hours of the morning, but right now it feels like the sky is falling. It is pouring rain with thunder and lightning. Luckily the hard rain didn’t start until we got home from having dinner on a neighboring boat. But unluckily, we closed ourselves in and didn’t realize that the driving rain was blowing straight into our cockpit from the back. This caused the cockpit to drain an inordinate amount of water in a short period of time and the water found a way to come in above our engine room where there are a lot of connections to electronic gauges. One of those is the sensor for our propane gas and when it got wet, it started beeping like crazy. I ran up to the cockpit and let down the plastic curtains on the back and zipped them up as quick as I could. And right now Mark is using my hair dryer in the engine room to dry out the wiring. This is a problem we’ve never had before and it could have been prevented had we noticed which way the wind and rain were coming from and zipped those plastic curtains closed a few minutes earlier. Live and learn.

Mark spent time today making new covers for all of our big fenders. We bought the polar fleece months ago in Hyannis, but had never had the time to cut out and sew them. That job is now done. I spent my entire afternoon in Patsy and Joe’s kitchen cooking and will probably do the same tomorrow. Family and friends arrive on Tuesday, so lots of food will be needed. Today’s big job was making lasagna. Patsy made two lasagnas and I made two, one of which is to be frozen to eat on the passage from here to Florida. Mark and Joe put Christmas lights on the front porch and Joe watched the football games for us. Then we came back to the marina to have dinner aboard No Regrets, a beautiful 1970’s 50-foot Hatteras owned by Beth and John Schwab. They also invited Lee and Lynda and we had a delightful evening together. Dinner was great, but the pumpkin pie nestled in chocolate was my favorite. I never thought of combining pumpkin and chocolate. Delicious!
