Day 23, Year 10: A Big Chill
Date: Sunday, November 2, 2014
Weather: Sunny and Cold
Location: R Dock, Lightkeepers Marina, Little River, SC
It appears that the whole east coast is having a Big Chill. Around noon I saw a sports reporter on TV at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Massachusetts, and the field was completely white with snow. I did a double-take and checked the calendar. Yep. It is really just November 2—not time for snow in Massachusetts. Then I read the log of friends Linda and Mike Stuart who biked into northern Florida yesterday and they had on long pants and jackets. Yep. It is cold in Florida as well. It’s going to be in the low 30’s F here tonight. I can’t believe it is so cold all up and down the coast, but it appears to be the case. Sure hope this is not a sign of what’s to come this winter. I just checked the temp in Fort Lauderdale and it is even going to dip into the 50’s there tonight. That’s better than the low 40’s in northern Florida and the 30’s here, but still a bit on the chilly side. Since we are hoping to head to Fort Lauderdale sometime in December, I sure hope it warms up down there and stays that way!
It was another busy day in the ‘neighborhood’. We went to Patsy and Joe’s early and started scanning negatives and photos from yesteryear. Mark did the negative scanning on the Epsom scanner and I scanned old photos on the printer/scanner. We kept both busy all day as well as Joe’s computer and mine. The progress is slow, but once in a while we see a photo of one of our kids when they were very little that really makes us smile and that makes the process worth it. Mark stopped for a bit in the afternoon to help Brian Thompson build a hand rail for the steps coming into the house from the garage. And I stopped to bring pots of flowers inside just in case it frosts tonight. Patsy and Joe’s granddaughter Jessica came to visit with two of her friends and then Mark and I had dinner with Patsy and Joe.
In between scanning, Mark also researched possible stops on the Intracoastal between here and southern Florida and researched flight possibilities from here to Puerto Rico. Justin and Jo have invited us to spend Christmas with them in Puerto Rico, but we are not finding flights we can afford. Just a week ago, the prices were lower, but they have increased. So flying to Puerto Rico might have to wait for a couple of months. If, however, we do go to Puerto Rico for Christmas, it will be the end of December before we leave for Florida. If we don’t go to Puerto Rico, we will leave here right after Mark’s December 9 infusion and arrive in Florida for Christmas. And once we decide when we will go, we have to decide just how we will get there—outside or inside in the Intracoastal Waterway. That planning will go on for a few more days and then we will make a decision. Of course, if we decide ‘outside’ the weather could force us inside, so we have to be prepared for both. As our good friend Lynne Kirwin says, “You make plans and then life happens.”
