Day 110, Year 10: Last Day in Fort Lauderdale . . . for now
Date: Wednesday, January 28, 2015
Weather: Sunny and Beautiful; Daytime Temp Low-70’s F, Low-50’s Overnight
Location: Anchored in Lake Sylvia, Fort Lauderdale, FL
Today was our last day in Fort Lauderdale for now. We will be back, but tomorrow morning we are sailing south to Miami and making our way to Coconut Grove in Biscayne Bay. We will stay there until Saturday morning when we continue our trek down the Keys and then on up to Fort Myers on Florida’s West Coast. The weather is not going to be perfect, but we think we have a plan—if the forecast doesn’t change. But of course it will. And of course we will adjust.
We have been taking our dinghy to Lee and Lynda’s boat in Las Olas marina most days this week and coming home with two 5-gallon jerry jugs of water each day to fill our tanks. We will miss the access to water, but we’ll be fine until we get to Fort Myers where we can fill up again. We don’t want to start the watermaker until we head to the Bahamas as you really shouldn’t run it when you are in populated areas. There’s too much of a risk that there is oil in the water and that can ruin your reverse osmosis water filter. For now, we have two full water tanks. We filled two diesel jerry jugs for Lee today and one gasoline jerry jug for our dinghy. I did the last laundry and almost cried when we got home and found that the sheet in the bottom of the bag was wet. Evidently there was water in the bottom of the dinghy and now I’ll have to wash that sheet by hand with the precious water we have. Boo hoo. Since this was our last day with a car, after Mark’s cancer treatment, we made a beer run, bought a couple of items at the store that we forgot yesterday, got Lynne and Ed’s car washed and the gas tank filled, bought dive booties for me, and Mark got a ‘professional’ haircut. I cut his hair on Sunday morning, but I just wasn’t happy with it. I had noticed a barber shop right next to the Southport Raw Bar, so we went there and I am much happier with his hair now. While Lynda and I were doing laundry in the late afternoon, Lee went with Mark to return Ed and Lynne’s car. Whew! Finally all of the last minute jobs were done and we all went out to dinner at Coconut’s to celebrate. Lee and Lynda walked there and Mark and I went in the dinghy since it was on our way home. I love restaurants with dinghy docks and Coconut’s did not disappoint. The food was good, the service was great, and it’s right on the water. Mark and I both got jambalaya which was great, but Mark asked for his to be extra spicy. It was and that was probably a mistake. Mine was perfect. Lee got coconut shrimp which he loved and Lynda got baby back ribs. It was a very generous portion with a bit of a different sauce. Lynda couldn’t decide whether or not she really liked it, but she gave me a taste and I loved it. Yummy. It was a nice way to end our stay in Fort Lauderdale.
