‘Tis the season. With Thanksgiving over, this morning I decided I could begin to focus on the winter holiday season. I really don’t allow myself to think about the December frenzy until Thanksgiving is behind me. But I look forward to December, the month of so many religious holidays … Hanukkah and Christmas and Kwanza. And my very favorite, Solstice. I love December, not because of the religious holidays, but in spite of them. I love the magic of twinkling lights on a Christmas tree, the smell of freshly baked cookies just waiting to be decorated, the lighting of the Menorah, and the thought that goes into choosing what gift to give someone you love.
So, I started my holiday season by cutting greenery from the periphery of the yard, and Heather and Jed’s yard where I came home with an armful of cedar branches to put in outdoor holiday planters for my front porch and for Heather and Jed’s. This idea happened because my friend Jane Woodin asked if she could come over to gather greenery for her outside planters as she did last year and the year before. By the time she arrived, I had holly, fir, pine, and juniper springs, plus the cedar, ready to be chosen. Once Jane had her bags full, we headed inside to have a cup of tea and catch up on life. When she left, I filled my pots with soil, but I didn’t put the greenery in. I should have, because soon it began raining, and now when I look at the weather report for the next week, it is going to be really cold and sunny or warmer and raining. Maybe I’ll bring the greenery inside to do the arrangements.
I spent the rest of the afternoon once again catching up on communications and running errands. December first is just a couple of hours away, so now the race is on.
