2025 Life Logs, Day 10: A Normal Winter Day
Date: Friday, January 10, 2025
Weather: Sunny, Warmer, Wind Way Down; Temp 40, Low 27 degrees F
Location: At Home on Lakeview Avenue with My Shadow, Falmouth, MA

What a difference a day makes! Yesterday I felt like I was in a freezing wind tunnel, but today was delightful. It was sunny and warm, not windless, but so much better. I know 40 degrees is not warm, but it sure felt like it today, and Shadow and I could finally do our longer walk again.

I spent part of my day working on Coco’s Christmas present. She wanted a vintage bracelet-style watch, so I sent her a new one that looks ‘vintage’. But the band is too big, and evidently it can’t be made smaller. And anything else I find online looks too big as well. Hearing my sad story, Heather and Jane Woodin both offered me some real vintage watches from their jewelry boxes, but none of them are currently running. I took the most promising one to Falmouth Jewelers to ask their opinion on how much it might cost to get it running. They couldn’t tell if it has a battery or if it is truly vintage and is just one you wind. I think the one I took in used to be mine, a Timex from around 1970. When Heather gave it to me, she thought it was hers, but I’ll have to talk to her again. But in any case, the jewelry store would have to send it to a watch repair specialty place that would assess it. The cost starts at $200 if you choose to have it repaired. But if it only needs a battery, the cost would be $30. Either is expensive. But Jane suggested a place in Wareham where she has had watch batteries replaced for just $3.00. Next week, I’ll take the watches there and see what they say. So, the search for a Christmas present for Coco continues.

I spent time in the afternoon working on a presentation for my public policy group and tonight I attended an MBL Falmouth Forum. The speaker was Deborah Blum, a science journalist and author who writes about the history of poisons in food and drink over the years. Her presentation was a little strange, but interesting. And I got to see my friend Judy Fenwick which made it worth the trip to Woods Hole.
