2026 Life Logs, Day 297: Falmouth to Rural Vermont
Date: Saturday, October 24, 2026
Weather: Sunny, Finally No Wind; High Temp 58, Low 30 degrees F
Location: Visiting Sam om Beach Hill Road in Glover, VT

Heather and I arrived in what feels like the middle of nowhere around 7:30 tonight, but it was great to see Sam’s smiling face. It was a gorgeous afternoon for driving north, but it is a long trip to Glover, Vermont from Falmouth!

This morning, after making arrangements for Shadow’s care while I am gone, making arrangements for someone to take my place for Noon at Noonan tomorrow, and getting everything packed and ready to Vermont, I headed to Main Street for Noon at Noonan. As soon as that ended at 1 pm, I rushed home, packed the car and headed north. I met Heather and Jed in Wareham as they had been up that way for Jonah’s soccer game. We got Heather’s bags transferred to my car and we were off for Vermont. My car was completely full of bags. It looked like we were going to be traveling for weeks. Because Sam is staying in a cabin that he will not be returning to when he heads to work at 6 am on Monday, all laundry has to be done by Sunday night. The cabin has no washer and dryer, so we will have to find a laundromat on Sunday. But we took sleeping bags, pillows, and bedding for both of us so that when we leave on Monday morning, the cabin will be all set. It belongs to some friends of Heather’s, so we need to leave it as it was when Sam moved in a week ago. On Monday after work, he will be moving into another friend’s Airbnb for the week, but at the end of that stay, he will pay the cleaning fee so it will be ready for the next occupants. He is then basically couch surfing and living out of his car the following week or so until his rental for the winter is ready. All of this moving around is necessary as there was just no one place he could find to rent at a price anywhere affordable until the second week of November.

So where in the world is Beach Hill Road in Glover, Vermont? From Falmouth, you head directly north to New Hamphsire and keep driving north on I93, curing to the northwest after Littleton, NH, and on to the end of 93 in St. Johnsbury, VT, and then further north on I91 to an exit for Glover and Barton. Then we got on a narrow dirt road for the climb to the top of Beach Hill Road. So, here we are about 25 miles from the Canadian border. I’ll have to let you know tomorrow what it looks like here as we drove in the dark after Littleton, NH. But the drive was worth it just to be able to see Sam and hear all about his new job for the winter. Snowmaking sounds like it is going to be hard, physical work, but the lure is that four days of hard work for pay results in three days off to snowboard for free. His job is at the Stowe Mountain Resort, owned by Vale Resorts. And so far, he is loving it. This cabin is 45 minutes northeast of Stowe, so early morning s and lots of driving this week. Next week’s Airbnb is closer and then his permanent rental is less than 20 minutes from the mountain. Since his shift will be 12 noon to midnight, I am so thankful that he will be closer once the weather gets wintry.

I will end with a message of thanks to Jed, Ollie, and my neighbor Andy who are taking care of my Shadow and to my Indivisible Falmouth friends for filling in at Noon at Noonan for me on Thank you for giving me this special time with Heather and Sam.
