Day 30, Year 8: Butterflies
Date: Monday, December 3, 2012
Weather: Mostly Sunny and Very Warm, Temp in the 70’s
Location: Lightkeeper’s Marina in Coquina Harbor, Little River, SC

Why are there butterflies here in December? We’re not used to this, but people here are and they are obviously spoiled by the weather. When I said hello to someone this morning and commented that it was a beautiful day, the woman replied by saying, “It’s about time.” We have been loving the sunny, warm-to-us weather, but the locals have thought it has been too cool. Today was exceptionally warm in my opinion, but obviously it is what people here expect. As I look at the long-term forecast through next week, it looks like another Nor’easter will be coming through later this week with 15-25 knot winds that will cool things down a bit, but as soon as the NE winds blow through, the weather warms up considerably. Temps in the 80’s were in the forecast for one day next week.

Even though it was so beautiful, we decided to go ahead with our plan for day. Mark worked on polishing the topsides and I decided to do a laundry instead of doing computer work. The pump out boat came by to pump out our holding tank and while that was happening a couple of other boaters came over to meet us. One was a young woman with the cutest 20 month-old little girl. Live-aboards are not actually allowed in this marina, but like us, Zsanic (pronounced like Zsa, as in Zsazsa Gabor, and ‘nic’ like ‘neek’), her husband Scott, and little Kaylin live here most of the time. In our short conversation we found out that Zsanic is only a year older than our daughter Heather and she has spent most of her adult life as a nun. She has obviously left that life behind and is now married with a child. Like Mark, when she met her husband he had dreams of building a cabin and of going sailing. The stories were just too similar, so we decided that Scott and Mark just have to meet. We invited them over on Thursday evening and will enjoy getting to know another cruising couple. It was then time to go shopping with Lee and Lynda. We went to the World Market, to Best Buy to check out computers, tablets, and cameras, and then to Costco to do the food shopping. The wine I wanted to purchase was no longer on sale for an incredibly cheap price, so instead of a case, I ended up just buying a couple of bottles. But I made up for it by buying over $200 worth of food that we will need in the Bahamas. The provisioning for that adventure has begun. When we returned to the marina, Mark and I took the food that we bought for the Bahamas to my sister’s to store for now and delivered a couple of items we bought for her. While there, we got to enjoy the fully decorated Christmas tree that we helped put up last week. It looks beautiful with its twinkling lights and we have a hard time believing it is not a live tree. It certainly helps to promote a feeling of holiday cheer.
