Day 24, Year 8: Settling In
Date: Tuesday, November 27, 2012
Weather: Overcast with Rain Late in the Day, Still Warm
Location: Lightkeeper’s Marina in Coquina Harbor, Little River, SC
It has taken a few days for us to start getting used to our ‘new’ home.
Mark is not working and I am not busy being a Granny Nanny, so we have more
time than we are used to having. Today we helped my sister Patsy and her
husband Joe decorate their home for Christmas. They bought an artificial
tree the other day and Mark and I were amazed at how easy it was to put up.
It came in three sections with the lights already integrated into the parts.
So you just stack up the sections, pull down the branches, and plug it in.
It was instant Christmas and the tree looked like a real spruce. After the
tree went up, Mark and Joe decorated the outside with lights. We didn’t
stay to see the effect after dark, but I think we will certainly enjoy the
twinkling lights in the trees and bushes.
After we left Patsy’s, we went shopping to buy lights to decorate Windbird.
That proved to be more difficult than we anticipated. Home Depot was almost
out of lights and Lowe’s had lights, but didn’t have LED lights that are the
continuous type. So we gave up, went to a little market and bought some
Power Ball tickets, and will just kick back and hope we win 425 mil tomorrow
and can afford to just order the lights we need online! On the serious
side, we are finding shopping here a bit challenging; much like it is on the
Cape. There are zillions of stores, but finding the items we want is not
always easy. The supermarkets don’t have much in the way of organic produce
and meat and there are no alternative stores like Whole Foods or Trader
Joe’s. I can’t even find Amstel Light bottled beer in cases. And buying it
in the 12-paks that are available is very expensive. I’m hoping we just
don’t know where to look yet, so hopefully we will get better at finding the
essentials here. Settling in is a little more difficult than we
anticipated, but we’ll eventually figure it all out.
