Day 316, Year 6: The Day After
Date: Monday, September 5, 2011
Weather: Partly Sunny and Continued Wind
Location: Eel Pond, Woods Hole, Massachusetts

The day after having guests aboard is always a bit lonely. We so enjoyed visiting with Kevin and Claire and found Josh to be such a delightful guest. He is thoughtful, witty, insightful way beyond his years, and just generally easy to be around. We really look forward to seeing him more often now that he is here in the northeast. We all piled into our Ford Taurus station wagon at 7:30 am, took Mark to West Marine, and then went to Heather and Jed’s to pick up their cars. Heather, Jed, Sam, and Jonah returned from Maine last night and they were still in bed when we arrived this morning. The boys are always up by 6:30 am, but they went to bed late every night in Maine and still got up early, so they were making up for lost sleep this morning. We finally roused Heather and Jonah and not long after we heard Sam stirring. We managed to get everyone up to say hello and then Kevin and Claire were off to visit with friends who just arrived in Falmouth yesterday to start post-docs at MBL (Marine Biological Lab) tomorrow. I led Josh out of town through the back roads and then returned to H & J’s to plant the fall garden I prepared earlier in the week. I think this was just my excuse to go back and spend more time with Sam and Jonah, but I did get the job done and enjoyed seeing the boys and Heather and Jed after a week’s absence. I came home and did a laundry by hand, taking the items to the town dock to rinse and then hanging them on the boat’s life lines to dry. And then all of a sudden, it was time to go and pick up Mark.

Tonight we went to dinner at Bruce and Jane Wooden’s. Bruce works with Jed at WHOI and we have often stayed at Bruce and Jane’s when we were here visiting. Jane invited another couple who moved here in February to be close to their daughter who is a scientist at WHOI and we all enjoyed talking about our children. Bruce and Jane’s daughter has two month-old twins, the first grandchildren, and we enjoyed sharing grandparent stories. The company was great and the meal was delicious, so thank you, Bruce and Jane. Tomorrow is Sam and Jonah’s first day of school at the Woods Hole Cooperative Daycare and I think I’ll pick them up and bring them to the boat for the afternoon. Tomorrow is also Heather and Jed’s anniversary, so I think we’ll be doing something to celebrate that-maybe babysitting while Heather and Jed go out for the evening.
