Day 304, Year 6: What To Do?
Date: Wednesday, August 24, 2011
Weather: Beautiful Day, Windy
Location: Eel Pond, Woods Hole, Massachusetts
Irene is looking more and more like she might head this direction and we just aren’t sure what to do. There are only so many options. We could ride out the weather here in Eel Pond, but there are lots of ‘buts’ about that. We could stay here BUT this pond can rise ten to twelve feet or more and we have no idea if our mooring can extend to that height. If not, our bow would be held down below water level-not good. We could stay here BUT there are too many boats in this little pond and the big house boats in the outer harbor will be coming in because of the weather-even more crowded. We thought could possibly go to a marina and be put on land BUT the marinas won’t do that because they feel it is too dangerous-we thought they would but we just read this on the internet. Someone at West Marine told us that we might be able to get into a shallow lake on Martha’s Vineyard that has hurricane moorings BUT when we look at the charts, it is way too shallow for us. There is another shallow bay on Martha’s Vineyard on the southwest side at Menemsha, BUT we know nothing about it. We’ll look into this tomorrow. We could go out to sea and ride out the storm BUT that could be disastrous or it could save Windbird. It looks like high water will be more or a problem than wind, and in that case going to sea would make sense. BUT if a full-scale hurricane hits that wouldn’t be such a good idea. So what to do? Tomorrow will be spent watching the weather and checking with anyone and everyone we can track down to see what the local advice might be. It is interesting that we have not one cruising guide to the northeast US aboard, so we have no information. We have had cruising guides for every place we have visited-just not for HOME. We’ll also remedy that tomorrow. Heather and Jed have gone through this preparation for a hurricane routine a few times since living on the Cape, so they feel they have things under control on land. The pre-cut parts for Heather and Jed’s shed arrived late this afternoon. All of the wood is bundled so it can be covered with a tarp and will hopefully make it through the wind and water that we expect. So we just have to do some quick research and make a decision on what to do about Windbird.
Tonight my niece Lynn and her friend Sandy come to spend the night. They are driving here from western Massachusetts which is about a three hour drive. They should arrive any time and tomorrow they will head out to Provincetown for a beach vacation. Hopefully Irene will not interrupt their vacation plans.
