Day 293, Year 6 A New Look for Handleysail.com
Date: Saturday, August 13, 2011
Weather: Sunny, Clear Blue Skies, Low to Mid-80’s
Location: Eel Pond, Woods Hole, Massachusetts
Handleysail.com has a new look. All of the changes are not made, but enough was ready that our son Justin switched us to the new look today. You’ll have to let us know what you think. And a great big thank you to Justin for doing the work.
Our day started with a bang, or maybe I should say some very loud noises on shore. I got up to see what was happening and it was the delivery of a hundreds of porta-potties that will be needed by the thousands of runners who will arrive here early in the morning. Porta-potties are lined up along the pond, along the street, in parking areas, and stuffed in every little nook and cranny in Woods Hole. I should have taken photos today, but I didn’t. Maybe tomorrow as soon as the runners leave Woods Hole, I can get some porta-potty pics. Their arrival certainly changed the looks of this little town. After going to the dock to wash the cockpit cushions, I took Mark in to work an hour early so we could look at the Force 10 stove that was on super sale today. We ended up buying it because the deal was just too good to pass up, but I’m still feeling guilty about the purchase. Our stove does work just fine, it just has all the problems that come with an older appliance. The oven doesn’t light automatically and that means taking the shelf and bottom out of the oven to get to the pilot. And the temperature control for the oven has a mind of its own. It would be a great stove for someone who doesn’t bake as much as I do. But since we live aboard and cook and bake almost everyday, the new addition should make life much easier. I’m sure the guilty feelings about unnecessarily spending money will go away quickly once the new stove is installed and making daily life easier.
While I was still at West Marine, a visitor came by asking to see Mark. It was the father of a good friend that worked with Mark at New Hampshire Public Radio, Scott McPherson. Scott’s father comes down from Plymouth every year to run the Falmouth Road Race. He has been following our travel logs and decided that he should come to meet us since he was in town. It was just a stroke of luck that we were both at West Marine when he arrived and it was a most pleasant surprise to have him stop by to say hello. Now we will have someone to look for in the race tomorrow.
Heather, Jed, Sam, Jonah, and Mark all arrived in Woods Hole at 6 pm. Heather and gang are spending the night to see the start of the race tomorrow. They have been here for fifteen years and have seen the race from various places along the route, but they have never been in Woods Hole for the start. The traffic getting in and out of here on road race mornings is a nightmare, but this year since they can stay on Windbird right in the center of town, they decided to come join in the fun. We might try to brave the crowds, but if there are just too many people, we will sit in the dinghy close the bridge and watch the runners as they begin their seven mile trek.
It is a beautiful night here on Eel Pond with the light of a full moon glistening on the water. We had a great evening with Heather, Jed, Jonah, and Sam, and are so enjoying living close enough to share such times together. The only thing that could make it better would be if Justin, Jo, and Ziggy lived closer. But they live in a very special place and are happy there. So we are just going to have to find ways to visit as often as possible.
