Day 259, Year 6 Sail to Martha’s Vineyard
Date: Sunday, July 10, 2011
Weather: Another Beautiful Day; Temp in the Upper 70’s
Location: Eel Pond, Woods Hole, Massachusetts

Before starting to write the log, I just want o wish my sister Patsy a happy birthday. And now I want to know who Martha was and what happened to her vineyard? Today the island of Martha’s Vineyard is a huge tourist destination and we joined the crowd by sailing there with Heather, Jed, Sam, and Jonah. Sam, Jonah, Mark and I headed into Woods Hole early this morning to get a newspaper and a coffee for Jed. We enjoyed a very quiet Woods Hole morning with almost no people-not the normal situation in the summer. We then went back to Windbird, and after a breakfast of pancakes, we dropped the mooring and headed out. Unfortunately, all too soon we were met by negative current and no wind. So we motored all the way to the Vineyard. We took a picnic lunch ashore and enjoyed it in a public park where a guy was flying his remote controlled air plane. Sam and Jonah enjoyed watching this immensely. After lunch we walked into town to what Heather and Jed call the kitchen store. While they shopped, we took Jonah and Sam to the local music store next door where young guys were sitting around playing guitars. Sam and Jonah tried out the bongo drums, the djembe drum, a couple of xylophones, and an old piano. After we got back together with Heather and Jed we stopped to have an ice cream treat and then it was back to Windbird and back to Woods Hole. But once again, the current was against us and it was strong. So it was motoring once again. Despite the adverse conditions, we were home in time to come through the Eel Pond bridge at 5:30 pm, had dinner at 6:30 pm, and said farewell to the kids just after 7:00 pm. It was a great day and we look forward to more sails with the kids. Sam is a natural sailor and loves the water. Jonah is not quite the enthusiastic sailorman as yet, but we’ll keep working on that.
