Today was a skatepark and beach day with the Goldpebbles. I was going to have to balance my time with the boys with fixing a salmon salad to take with me to my dining-in group dinner tonight and with picking up an ice cream cake and transporting that to the dinner. But thanks to an offer from good friends, Karen and Peter Baranowski, I was spared those two jobs and could focus my whole day on the boys. Karen sent a text this morning offering to pick up a lobster roll for me for dinner tonight and that sounded perfect. I wouldn’t have to figure out how to keep a salmon salad cold while I spent time at the beach with the boys. And then she called and offered to pick up the ice cream birthday cake I had ordered for tonight’s dinner and transport that for me. Again, perfect! Thank you, Karen and Peter, for making my day SO MUCH easier.

My Newcomers Dining-In Group has become a very close group of friends. We have managed to get together three times since the beginning of the coronavirus days by meeting outside. Last month we met at Terry and Olivia White’s. They have a huge brick patio that makes social distancing very easy, and they invited us back again this month. We all brought our own dinner and drinks, but Jane Woodin and I went together to order the birthday cake for our summer birthday people—Bruce Woodin and Olivia White. I offered to get the ice cream cake at Smitty’s and it was delicious. Thanks to my grandson Jonah for his recommendation. He thinks Smitty’s ice cream cake, one layer of vanilla ice cream and topped by a layer of chocolate ice cream with a special fudge sauce between the layers and topped with a chips of chocolate and crushed Oreos. Not particularly healthy, but oh so delicious.

I had asked Jane to bring candles for the cake. When she started to light them, it suddenly dawned on me what a terrible idea that was in these coronavirus days. Blowing on food you are going to serve others is just not an option. This is common sense, but it is not our normal way of thinking. So, we didn’t light the candles, but Jane did take the cake around so the two birthday people could see it. Slowly, we are all learning how to make better decisions to stay healthy in these times.

I’m pretty sure I have never shed tears of joy over the choice of a Vice-Presidential candidate. But when I got home tonight and found out Kamala Harris is Joe Biden’s pick to be his running mate, I was overjoyed to the point of tears. She was not my first choice. I am, and will always be, an Elizabeth Warren die-hard supporter. But Kamala Harris was my second choice, and once I heard Biden’s decision, it felt so right. Barack Obama said today that Joe Biden nailed this decision, and I agree.
