2017 Life Logs, Day 232: Falmouth Road Race Day
Date: Sunday, August 20, 2017
Weather: Perfect Sunny Weather with a Breeze; High 81, Low 64 degrees F
Location: At Home in The Studio, Falmouth, MA

Since I live just a few hundred feet south of Mile 6 of the Falmouth Road Race, there is no ignoring it on this day. The music and cheering started early, so that prompted me to get out and about in the crowd. As I walked out of the drive-way, I stopped to say hello to Camille and her daughter Amanda. Camille and her husband Paul own The Studio and live in the apartment above me in the summer months. She was out in her pink golf cart cheering on the runners. We talked for a bit and then I headed toward the beach. The walking was easier than it looked as most of the people watching the race were right on the edge of the sidewalk leaving room for me to make it through behind them. It was tight in places, but it was a fun walk. There were more than 11,000 runners this year and as I walked I felt like all of Falmouth came out to cheer them on.

Once I got past the finish line, I realized that I couldn’t cross the street. I had to walk the full length of Falmouth Heights Beach before I could turn to head back home. By the time I got back to Falmouth Heights Road at Mile 6, most of the runners had completed the course, but there were lots of participants still walking the course. The road was paved with Poland Springs green paper water cups as Mile 6 was one of four official water stops. I picked my way across the street, walking over the water cups and through the walkers and runners. When I got back to The Studio drive-way, Camille was still there in her pink golf cart and now she was distributing Mimosas to people lining the streets. I declined the champagne, but I had a virgin Mimosa to be social. I headed home to have lunch and then I headed to Woods Hole to see the 2 pm production of ROSE, a solo performance portraying matriarch Rose Kennedy. The setting is a sun room in the Kennedy’s Hyannis home and the date is July of 1969 . . . just a few days after Teddy had the tragic accident on Chappaquiddick. The actress, Linda Monchik, has performed in New England for 25 years and she did a wonderful job of portraying Rose Kennedy. What an interesting woman. Rose was an Irish American born in the North End of Boston in 1890. The play brought out the dilemmas that women of that era had to deal with and it revealed the way this strong woman dealt with the loss of her children. Today was the last performance and I hated to spend such a beautiful afternoon indoors, but I am very glad I went. Thanks, Olivia, for the recommendation.

After the performance, I walked down the street to Woods Hole’s Waterfront Park and sat in the sunshine and read my book in the sunshine for a bit before returning home. I heard from Heather this afternoon. They were at an amusement park in Goteborg (Gothenburg) and rode on the Lisebergbanan, a roller coaster that travels at just over 50 miles an hour! Lisebergbanan translates as Liseberg rail line and the cars looks look like a train. Heather sent a text saying it was quite scary, but there were no tears. So, I guess everyone enjoyed the ride. I also got a text message with photo attachment of Ziggy climbing a scary rock. This afternoon was adventure time for my grandchildren!

Tomorrow is a full day—up early to go feed guinea pigs at the Goldstones, sail on Pooh with Bruce at 8 am, lunch with Jane and Olivia at 11:30 am, annual physical at 2:00 pm, and hopefully out in time to see the eclipse at 2:48 pm. Then I’ll get ready for my trip to Nyack on Tuesday morning. Whew!
